<snip> I was freaked out waiting for the 2003 Itinerary Guide. I kept getting messages on this list where people were saying they got their trek assignment from Philmont, and I had not even received my Guide. Still, we got Trek #24, which was our first choice.

Being prepared by reviewing what was available last year and responding promptly are important.
However, realize that you are not competing with the 1800 odd crews that will arrive over the course of the summer, but only with the 30 or 35 that arrive the same day you do.
Historically, about 2/3 of crews get their first choice, another 20% their second choice, and a total of about 95% one of their first three. You can be pretty sure those 5% at the bottom of the barrel wanted popular routes and did not return their selection cards promptly. Tom Wills worked in Logistics last summer, and when he started in May, there were about 50 crews that still had not returned their selections. Go figure.
