Pete,
It sounds like you are describing the hike upstream to Black Mountain. My
boys counted thirty or so crossings. Most of the crossing were at locations
where the creek was fairly shallow. Thank god for GoreTex boots. We also used
fallen logs to cross in many places.
This past summer, we started at Six Mile gate and hiked into Anasazi and on
to Indian Writings. This was a day hike with PTC Silverados. Due to large
amounts of rain and hail that week, the creek was flowing really fast, and
deep. We used some logs to cross, but I managed to step into the water once,
and it was up to my waist. I'm 6'2", so the water was deep. Some scouts on a
trek were crossing with us, and they used a trekking pole to give me a hand.
It is my understanding that this creek is usually quite shallow, and slow
moving in "normal" weather.
