The worst trail for stream crossings is the trail between North Fork Urraca
and Black Mountain camps - this trail crosses the stream between 50 and 55
times in its 4-5 mile length. The Middle Fork trail between the Hunting
Lodge and Cypher's Mine has about a dozen stream crossings. There are other
trails that cross streams too, but those two trails are probably where you
will encounter the most crossings. Very rarely are any of the streams much
higher than ankle-deep. At wider crossings, you will usually find logs to
cross on (we helped build some log bridges on the newly-reopened North Fork
Cito trail last summer). Your Ranger should tell your crew to always undo
hipbelts and sternum straps whenever you cross a stream, no matter how deep.
Make sure to heed that advice.
