When I went over Phillips we hiked up from Cyphers and down to Clear Creek.
I did not mind the switchbacks going up and thought how tough it would be to
hike up the steep trail from Clear Creek. When I hiked Baldy, I went up
from the North (steep) side and thought how I'm glad I did not have to come
down it. Later we ran into one of our other crews that had hiked the
opposite direction. Someone in that group commented that they were glad
they went down the north side and did not have to hike up it. When I read
posts here commenting on hiking up or down on a steep trail, it always seems
that it does not matter which way someone went, they were just glad they did
not have to do it the other direction. For me as I get older, I don't mind
a few switchbacks to make a trail easier. Note I said "few switchbacks" and
not something like that ridiculous trail down tooth ridge into base camp.

Subject: Re: [Philmont]: Trail / Distance questions
We did Trek #5 in 2001, and it was a long hike from Mt. Phillips to Cito.
There was a beautiful view from Thunder Ridge, and then it was a very long
and winding trail down the ridge, headed towards Cyphers. I would not want
to do all of those switchbacks going uphill. We took a long layover at
Cypher's and ate lunch. As we traveled along the creek, we saw tons of
trout in the shallow water. We stopped and visited with friends at Hunting
Lodge and then headed up to Cito.

I stand corrected. It was trek #5, which DOES go from Phillips to Cito in
one day.
