I can almost gaurantee that Philmont wiill not allow people to just
show up and do a dayhike. I know they frown upon former staff showing
up to visit their friends in the backcountry, and the staff even know
what they are doing. As compared to any old troop just taking a quick
hike.

Philmont will not allow crews to hike off season without a guide.
There are always lots of slots open for Autumn Adventure and Kanik if
scouts want to go to Philmont outside of the summer. I don't know why
anyone would want to go outside of those times. You can even bring
your own food if you don't want to eat the Philmont meals. During the
warm Kanik I worked, I took one crew out that spent 4 nights on the
trail doing backpacking. I don't know if Philmont will always alow
this, but they seemed to make an exception then. And that was one of
the more fun times I've ever been out with a crew.
