Couple of comments/thoughts on Danny Burke's listing of the 2005 changes
embedded below. In general, I would expect that the changes would have
little impact on crews' choices made looking at the 2004 TREKS, except
1. Adding Baldy to #17 should make all crews with Baldy as a priority to
look at it compared to and in addition to the other Baldy routes. And all
crews looking at the Valle should look at it in a different light, as no
other route combines significant time in the Valle with Baldy.
2. Going deeper into the Valle and not over Wilson Mesa might alter some
crews' view of Trek #24. This is one of the most popular choices year in
and year out, and the changes will not affect that.
Trek 17 Major Changes
Day 2 Anasazi
Day 3 Indian Writings
Day 4 Seally Canyon
Day 5 Whiteman Vega
Day 6 Ring Place
Day 7 Greenwood Canyon
Day 8 Copper Park
Day 9 Copper Park
Day 10 Pueblano Ruins
Day 11 Ponil
Adds Baldy and Continental Tie program at Pueblano in place of a trail camp
at Iris Park and Rich Cabins. It was listed at 70 miles last year (my
assessment is that it was closer to 45...); what is it listed as now with
the change? It is my understanding that improvements to the trail (or lack
of one) from Greenwood Canyon toward Copper Park was the most recent OA
trail crew project. Since at least 1999 except for last year, Trek #17 had
included Baldy, but using the Rich Cabins to Ewells Park (over Wilson Mesa)
trails.
Trek 19 Major Changes
Day 2 Anasazi
Day 3 Indian Writings
Day 4 Old Camp
Day 5 Dan Beard
Day 6 Seally Canyon
Day 7 Whiteman Vega
Day 8 Whiteman Vega
Day 9 Iris Park
Day 10 Rich Cabins
Day 11 Ponil
Trek 19, which had no crews at all last year, is now essentially what was
Trek 17 in 2004 except for Dan Beard in place of Ring Place. And
interesting enough is EXACTLY the same as Trek #19 in 2002, which of course
was not used that year because of the fire.
Trek 23 changes
Day 9 Upper Sawmill instead of Sawmill
This change was actually made last year (in 2004, changed from 2003.)
Trek 24 changes
Day 4 Greenwood Canyon instead of Pueblano Ruins
This is actually a pretty significant change, as the always popular Trek 24
now goes deeper into the Valle and drops both the hike over Wilson Mesa as
well as Continental Tie and Lumber program at Pueblano. Another trek
utilizing the recent OA trail work.
Trek 31 changes
Day 9 & 10 layover at Black Horse instead of Baldy Camp
Really a modest change, though Black Horse should be a much quieter place
than the other layover camps feeding crews to Baldy. I understand that
working on that trail was a prior OA trail crew project.
