1. Best Backpacking In New Mexico
By Annette McGivney, BACKPACKER Southwest Editor, October 2001

Philmont Scout Ranch
A favorite of Backpacker's Boy Scout readers, Philmont is a "high-adventure
base" owned by the Boy Scouts of America. This 137,000-acre area hosts more
than 19,000 Scouts each summer on weeklong backpacking trips, the rewards of
which are high-mountain splendor, new backcountry skills, and the
ever-important Philmont badge. Non-Scouts can get a taste of Philmont-style
New Mexico high country by hiking trails in the surrounding Carson National
Forest.

2. Nature Raging Out of Control (June 9, 2002 )
Amy and I left Colorado behind as we ventured down to Philmont Scout Ranch
in Cimarron, New Mexico where a day of heavy rain eased the fires currently
burning in Northern New Mexico and on the ranch. It was nice to revisit
Philmont and introduce Amy to a place that is home to thousands of Scouts,
like myself for example, each year.

4. Get Out More! Inspiring Story of the Week (April 2002)
This week, we had the pleasure of meeting Lizzie Goodrick. Lizzie was on her
way to Vancouver Island to spend a month brushing up on her kayaking skills
before heading to Philmont Scout Ranch to lead Boy Scouts over rugged
terrain in New Mexico.

Lizzie we salute you! Amy and Brent
5. Friendly Folks Everywhere! (April 17, 2002)
<snip>
Speaking of swapping stories, we continue to be impressed with the friendly
folks who come to Get Out More! events and want to tell us stories of their
own trips gone by and adventures to come. Brent was happy to share his
memories of Philmont, Boy Scout High Adventure Base with some aspiring Eagle
Scouts, and we enjoyed the company of an inquisitive Junior Girl Scout troop
as they prepared for a first backpacking trip. A couple days of trail work
with the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club and now we're looking forward to more
great people this weekend at the East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival in
Charleston South Carolina.
