One more thing.....

We purchased sectional maps from Philmont almost a year out from our
trek, and used them for all of our land navigation training and map
reading skills development. We used our specific itinerary and route to
discuss how we would navigate, what terrain features would be landmarks,
etc. I recall clearly sitting at Indian Writings and discussing the
next day's trip over Hart Peak. The boys were saying "Well, remember
from map training this is a tough climb up and out of here...see, here
is the reservoir half way up the peak, we should hit that by 8:00..."

Many was the time one boy would say "This looks so different then I
pictured it when we were learning the route back home."

Something we learned last year about maps: Call the Tooth of Time
Traders NOW and order this years sectional maps. The single map they
send you for planning does not always give you the kind of detail you
might want for making decisions, and the active trails get adjusted each
year. The single map (we called it the souvenir map) leaves out a lot of
details.
Happy Hiking,
 Tom
