A long way down and a "longer" way back up. I wouldn't want to take that
trip so carry extra water. In some years, the spring at the Shaefers Peak
camp provides water. Since Philmont was "wet" last year and this year (up
to 20" of snow on parts of the ranch last week), my guess is the spring
will be running this summer. In any case, the folks at Logistics will let
you know if the spring is running. If it isn't, you'll need to carry
extra water. One thing you might consider is eating a supper for your
lunch at Clarks Fork and then eating a lunch for supper at Tooth Ridge as
doing that will save water.

Our crew members have always enjoyed it. It is something Scouts probably
won't do any where else except Philmont. Unless things have changed, the
process is to pack the burro with a limited amount of weight (rocks, etc.)
and then "race" against a couple of other burros being led by youth
members from other crews. Since burros don't always cooperate as humans
wish, it is an activity that advisors will especially enjoy watching.

Nose to tail for about two hours as the horses are trained in the fine art
of keeping their noses to the butt of the horse in front. If crew members
have extensive riding experience, it probably won't be all that enjoyable
but it will be for boys and adults without a lot of riding experience.
But it does get a different part of your body a little exercise. :-)
