RE: [Philmont]: A few questions

1. Looks like a 6-mile round trip on the 2003 Central Country Sectional to
Upper Clarks Fork. With a good decent (~1000') from near Shaefers Peak to
the camp (about a1.5 miles as the crow flies.) Its 7+ miles (roundtrip) and
an additional 500' decent, if you have to go all the way to Clarks Fork. I
don't know if there's water at Upper Clarks Fork or Ponderosa Park. If the
spring is running at Shaefers pass, you can avoid most of the
decent/re-ascent and it should only be about a 4.5 - 5 mile round trip.
Another consideration, the trail along Tooth Ridge can be pretty rocky.
2. Our crew raced burros at Harlan. Last night on the trail. Had a great
time. I guess the opportunity run, yell, and generally act like "nuts"
appealed to our crew.
3. Our guys really liked the ride at Beaubien. No one had ever ridden a
horse before. It seems like they were gone for about an hour and a half.
Some of the horses can be a bit cantankerous. My son was nipped on the leg
(small bruise) by another rider's horse. Riders must wear long pants and
can't weigh over 200 lbs.

Subject: [Philmont]: A few questions

Philmont vets....

Some basic questions:

1. How far is it from Tooth Ridge camp back to Clark's Fork to get water?

2. Burro racing sounds interesting to many of our guys. Is it fun or
so-so?

3. I've seen comments about the horse riding. Can any of you elaborate on
what that's like and how the boys liked it?

Thanks.
