A long way down and a "longer" way back up. I wouldn't want to take that
trip so carry extra water. In some years, the spring at the Shaefers Peak
camp provides water. Since Philmont was "wet" last year and this year (up
to 20" of snow on parts of the ranch last week), my guess is the spring
will be running this summer. In any case, the folks at Logistics will let
you know if the spring is running. If it isn't, you'll need to carry
extra water. One thing you might consider is eating a supper for your
lunch at Clarks Fork and then eating a lunch for supper at Tooth Ridge as
doing that will save water.
I agree with the post above. It would be a VERY long, tiring walk back to
Clark's Fork from Tooth Ridge Camp and then return. Probably shorter and
easier to hike round trip to Base Camp for water from Tooth Ridge Camp -- just
guessing, as I don't have a map to look at. Certainly, the trail is easier
from Tooth Ridge Camp to/from Base Camp than from Tooth Ridge Camp to/from
Clark's Fork.
One thought: have people carry a collapsible water bottle for use on days
when you are going into a dry camp. Some of us used a Platypus (Cascade
Designs, Seattle) available from REI and others. It has a screw top, weighs
practically nothing when empty, and sits in your pack like an empty plastic bag
until you fill it with water. Mine holds 2 liters. There are other sizes.
After you eat supper for lunch at Clarks Fork, fill up all water bottles and
"spare" water bottles for the trek over the Ridge. Remember, you will be
carrying only dinner and breakfast as you leave Clark's Fork. Neither take up much
volume in a pack. Everyone will have LOTS of space in his/her pack for
water, IF they have something to carry the water in. Better, in my opinion, to
have each person carry his/her own water in 2-liter containers than to hoist
something larger for the "crew."
Prepare for your hike to and along the ridge while at Clark's Fork. Hydrate
yourselves very well. I recall we were at Clark's Fork about 2 - 3 hours
before we headed up the trail to the ridge. I drank several liters of water
slowly over that 3 -hour stopover. Had no ill effects enroute.
Our crew reached Base Camp the following morning about 10 AM with less than
1 liter each. Shaffer's spring was dry in 2003 when we hiked the ranch.
