If you want to tie flies and practice your casting, Fish Camp is great.
If you want to catch some trout, take a packable fly rod and fish the
streams and beaver ponds. Fish Camp is a beautiful place but it
receives so much fishing pressure that the fish are very wary. I last
fished there in 1972 and none of us caught fish, and there are probably
5 times as many people fishing there today. On the other hand, every
time I have cast to trout in the streams along the trail, I have caught
fish. It can be difficult to find time to work in a little fishing
while hiking, but every beaver pond you pass holds hungry fish that
have rarely seen an artificial fly. Just stop for lunch next to a
stream, eat quickly and fish while the others are resting. You can
always rest when you get to camp. The thrill of catching wild trout
rising to a dry fly in spectacular surroundings will never be
forgotten.
