Dr. Bob writes...
I must admit, I am quite surprised (stunned, really) that a trail that was on the full map was not on the corresponding sectional. I'm thinking that had to be a mistake, not an omission by design. Anyone else ever run into this on other parts of the Ranch?
Comment...
In addition to building new trails (Black Horse) and relocating existing ones (down to Base or Trail Peak) trails do get abandoned. That might be one - not on the newer Sectional but on the older overall map, which is dated "revised 1998". I personally think that the trails on it were not updated (at least not completely) then - rather it was a minor update of the (what I believe to be a) 1994 map (the magnetic declination is for that year), and I have no knowledge of the history of the mapping prior to that.
That fact alone - the trails on the overall map do not reflect at least ten years of changes - is enough reason to NOT use the overall map for navigation. However, if you are off the trails and trying to get back, knowing where a trail used to be is a big help. While I would not carry old maps just for that reason, I would have the Crew Leader carry the "sovenier" from Logistics on the trail.
