RE: [Philmont]: Picking up programs

Double dipping or picking up programs along the way is an allowed
practice, though there are downfalls from this technique.

If you are a crew that gets going early, you win the prize and are
usually able to double dip at a pass thru camp and enjoy the program. In
some cases the pass thru camp may be on your direct route otherwise you
may have to take a detour to pick it up. If your final destination is
another staff camp though, you may get in late and miss the program
there, so your crew chief should plan the crews time wisely.

On the flip side, if you are a crew that gets going a bit late or you
have a long trek to the next staff camp, you will have a much lower
probability of taking part in the program. During our trek last year, we
got into Cimarroncito and Clear Creek at 1200 both times, but missed
both of those programs, because other crews slipped in before us. Of
course your success depends on how popular a program is and the number
of crews going through that given day. Philmont could probably do a
better job of prioritizing crews and making sure the primary crews get
their slot.

All of this is a good reason for crews to get up and get going early.

We passed through head of dean last summer and picked up the challenge
course. Just check with the staff. Getting there early helps.

How easy is it to pick up programs along the way...for example...if we
are
passing through Head of Dean...can we do the Challenge events...or does
this
have to be on our itinerary to do?

Thanks
