If you can get to a camp *early*, and they have available staff and time
slots, you will *almost* always be able to do the program. Note,
however, that Crews that are *scheduled* to have the program always have
priority, and so there are absolutely no guarantees. This has caused
some hard feelings in Cews that hiked a long way to get a program they
really wanted, only to be told there was no room at the inn.
At least two programs are tough to get into - horseback riding and rock
climbing. Horseback rides are limited by the number of horses, and are
scheduled at Basecamp. Sometimes a Crew will blow off their ride, in
which case you *may* be allowed to sub in if you happen to be there
waiting - most years, the wranglers tend to be a lot less concerned
about schedules than Basecamp. In other cases, there are a few extra
horses available, but not a whole Crew's worth, in which case (again if
the wranglers are willing) you can draw straws or see who *really* wants
a ride. In my experience, the only availble rock climbing slots
available to non-scheduled Crews tend to be the first ones of the day,
because so many Crews are so slow getting out of bed.
The most important factor is getting extra programs bears repeating - be
there early!
