RE: [Philmont]: 2005 Itinerary Summaries - Trek #24

The Valle and North sectionals I have from 2001 do not show a trail through
Greenwood Canyon. That year they gave us a small map with better detail in
logistics. I don't have the maps in front of me, but from memory you
roughly go NW out of Rich Cabins to where you will intersect with a trail
from Greenwood Canyon. This trail is basically an old logging road. I
suggest that you don't camp at the first flat spot you see in Greenwood
Canyon as if you continue on up the trail for awhile there is a spot that is
between a fork in the creek that is a great campsite. There used to be a
log bridge across the creek to it. This also shortens the next day's hike
to Copper Park. The downside to this campsite is I don't remember another
place to camp beyond it, so if someone is already there, you may have to
backtrack to another suitable site. From this campsite, it is serious
uphill for 3-4 miles. Then you are at a peak with a great view of Baldy.
>From here, it used to be a straight down drop to Copper Park, but I
understand that a new trail has been built here in the last two years.

Our crew select 24 as there first choice this year and I am somewhat
disappointed with the change and I have never been over Wilson Mesa or to
Pueblano and in 2001 our trek (20) covered the Rich Cabins - Greenwood
Canyon - Copper Park route. On the other hand, Greenwood Canyon is a great
hike that I really don't mind doing again either.

Good evening.

I have a question about the change in Trek #24. When we did this trek in
2003, the trek went from Rich Cabins to Pueblano Ruins to Copper Park. This
allowed you to do Continental Tie & Lumber @ Pueblano and Gold Mining &
Panning, Mine Tour & Blacksmithing @ French Henry. Now, I understand this
part of the trek goes Rich Cabins to Greenwood Canyon to Copper Park.

I have the 1998 Valle Vadel map, and I cannot find the trail from Greenwood
Canyon. However, I am guessing it does not go through French Henry.

Does this mean Trek #24 no longer includes activites at both Pueblano and
French Henry?
