RE Below post:
Bob, no worries, mate.
Based upon my military experience, the variability of maps from one
edition to another can be significant or insignificant, but you darn
sure better know if there are any!
I became aware of this, doing my at-home map reconnaissance and pre-Phil
training, in that there was a discrepancy in the trails shown between
Pueblano and Ute Meadows, IIRC. That reminded me, long before flying
out there, of the need for caution when considering any man-made feature
on the map. We emphasized "terrain association" in our pre-trek
training, schooling the guys to trust what the earth's contours told
them as a means of verifying what the man-made trail said.
I'll say too that the trail NOT on the sectional did not look like it
was used much and in considering the reality, why would it? How many
people need to travel from the north side of Baldy down to the south
side only to double back down into Baldy Town?
Frankly, for us, that trail was a morale-boosting miracle and it saved
the day. And gave us a great adventure to add to our Philmont memories.

Subject: Map Differences
Dave - Not questioning your comments - just very surprised that Philmont
would leave viable trails off the sectionals that are listed on the
overall. That makes no sense at all. To be honest, I don't think I
would have even thought to pull out the overall in your situation.
Guess I know better now.... And based on several other comments I have
received on- and off-line, there are other spots where a section of
trail that's on the overall is not on the sectional. Who knew???
