RE: [Philmont]: Carson Meadows

I finally had a chance to consult my map and notes....
We were there last August. It was one of the nicest meadows I have ever
camped next to (OK Apache Springs was a little nicer), just beautiful.
Look for the last campsite on the south side of the meadow. I wouldn't
mind being buried there. But I digress...
The camp had a large water tank for a supply, and is nearly due south of
Abreu. You will see on the map that there are 2 trails heading south
from the Rayado, and one goes past Carson Meadows. It appears that if
you are at Carson Meadows, you must head back to the canyon trail, go a
little west, then backtrack on the other trail. This is not true. There
is another trail that makes the short cut between the two trails right
at Carson Meadows. This trail was not on last years map because it was
just completed during the season last year (OA Trail Crew, I think). I
expect it will be on this years maps.
Last August they were more than halfway through building a nifty
looking staff cabin. The word we got was that they plan on having search
and rescue program at that camp this year, but you guys with the new
books will know better. Sorry we missed that. It's a nice camp to have a
layover at for sure. If you have clear weather, be sure to lay on your
back in the meadow before going to bed, it is a wonderous sight to
behold.
If you have time in the evening, hike back to Abreu for the chicken
races. These colossal events are a much underrated spectacular source of
entertainment and one of the highlights for this advisor. I laughed so
hard my sides ached. I know chickens, and I know Scouts, but to watch
the two "working together" was more than I could stand. The walk from
Abreu to Carson meadows was around 3/4 hour (without packs), if memory
serves.
I envy you guys headed out there this summer and long to return and
refresh my soul.
Don't sweat the small stuff, let the crew handle it, in the end it will
all be great, even the "bad" parts.
Happy Hiking,
 Tom

It's a new staff camp not too far southwest of Abreu. There will be
water - it's piped up from Abreu. They attempted to drill a well at the
camp, but they hit nothing after 800 feet so it ended up a very deep dry
well.

I know that Carson Meadows has been mentioned before, but it is hard to
keep up with all on this list. I'm also sure that my new maps will show
it. The old ones don't. Even listed as "dry" camp in some places.
Help?? Thanks in advance.
