I defiantly agree with the advantages Coop listed for using you own
gear.
However, if you don't have the proper equipment (we had 4 man timberline
tents, ok for workups but not good for Philmont) purchasing the
equipment is not cheep. If you want to keep down costs then the extra
check in and out times are not a big issue. We have had four crews use
Philmont tents, ropes, cooking gear and dining flies without issue no
one thought the gear was substandard and learning how to set up and take
down became part of our ranger training. My point is Philmont gear
works fine and you can't beat the cost (Free).
Both methods work. Talk to you crew and see what they want to do. If
they agree they want to save some $$ they will not be short changed
using Phil gear.
