We brought our own troop tents (Timberline 4), Tarps (Kelty Noah's) and
Stoves (whisperlites) and bottles in 2004, when we return in '06 we will
re-evaluate ... itslikely to stay the same ...
We had three to a timberline and as a result payed no weight penalty, the
guys liked them just fine although the Phil tents looked good, and worked
out for all we talked to that used them. The Tarps were fine, and we used
trekking poles with them, although the Phil tarps looked OK, finally wrt
stoves, there was no choice but to bring our own as Philmont doesn't rent
them (at least not in '04) although ToT sells everything ... the real issue
here is transport issues, and that thread will no doubt erupt soon, but you
end up having to UPS them in and out ... in is no problem, UPS ships by
weight and they dont weigh much, out is different - Philmont charges per
stove, I think $7, so our 6 stoves cost $42 to ship home ... ouch.
Guess the point here is you can use what you have, and there are real
advantages to doing so as coop an others have pointed out ... if your crew
doesn't own much good back packing gear, Philmont will fit you out with
decent stuff. One distinct advantage to bringing your own gear is the time
savings in logistics, especially on the return, where you might be pressed
for time.

we had 4 man timberline tents, ok for workups but not good for Philmont)
We brought our Troop's 4 man Timberline to Philmont to compare to
Philmont's tents.
All but one group used the Timberlines and the other wished they had the
vestibule when it rained on several occasions.
The added room was WELL WORTH to little additional weight.
Just one scouter's opinion.
Hope this helps.
