RE: [Philmont]: Water carriers

I forgot to mention in my previous posting that one of the reasons I really
prefer the large MSR bladder-type carriers is that I find myself more likely
to drink as much water as I should. The bite-valve is always hanging there
right off your shoulder within easy reach. You can drink while you hike.
No fishing around behind your back trying to grab a Nalgene from a bottle
pocket or, worse yet, trying to shove it back in there. Basically, the less
hassle, the more likely you are to drink the appropriate amount of water. I
personnaly drink at least a gallon of water each day working in an office,
so there's no way the contents of a couple of Nalgenes are going to be
adequate for me during a typical day at Philmont. As far as leaks are
concerned, the MSR bags are more of a cloth-like material. As much as I
like the Camelback bladders and packs for cycling, the MSR are much better
suited for backpacking. I've never had one spring a leak.

Personally, I prefer water bottles. The crew either carried 2 one litter
water bottles or the equivalent for a bladder. This was enough getting from
camp to camp in most cases. The each carried a 3 litter collapsible nalgene
for dry camps and the hike over the tooth. We had plenty of water and the 3
litter collapsible spread out the load. No problems with any leaks either.

Philmont vets...

First of all, thank you for all the responses on my questions so far. The
feedback has been shared among our crew and decisions will be made based on
that information.

A question regarding water carriers:

What does everyone use? Nalgene bottles? Bladder-type carriers? A
combination? What about a 2-3 liter bladder carrier that will fit in the
top of one's pack? Lots of water for those long days between water sources,
but are they the best option?

I'm familiar with the collapsible water jugs. Those could work, too, (for
in camp) but I'm thinking that if each person on the crew were to have at
their disposal a water container that could carry a substantial amount of
water on the trail, it might end up being the best alternative.
