You are going to find a couple of positions on this issue too. Some folks love bladders with their tubes for easy access to water. I find that using bladders makes it more difficult for me to see how much water is being consumed by the crew. I can see if a nalgene bottle is half full or not pretty easily. Plus nalgenes are a heck of a lot less expensive than bladder water systems.

With that said, each member of our crew carries two 1-quart nalgene canteens. In addition, each member carries a 48 ounce collapsible nalgene canteen (Campmor, item #80902, 2.5 ounces, $8.99) for use when we go into dry camps. This way, each person carries a portion of the crew's water instead of relying on one person carrying a 2.5 gallon container.

Subject: [Philmont]: Water carriers

Philmont vets...

First of all, thank you for all the responses on my questions so far. The
feedback has been shared among our crew and decisions will be made based on
that information.

A question regarding water carriers:

What does everyone use? Nalgene bottles? Bladder-type carriers? A
combination? What about a 2-3 liter bladder carrier that will fit in the
top of one's pack? Lots of water for those long days between water sources,
but are they the best option?

I'm familiar with the collapsible water jugs. Those could work, too, (for
in camp) but I'm thinking that if each person on the crew were to have at
their disposal a water container that could carry a substantial amount of
water on the trail, it might end up being the best alternative.
