Good point about dinner for lunch. If you have water at lunch, but have a dry camp as your end point for that day, doing dinner at lunch can really save you on water, plus lunch weighs in a little lighter than dinner, too.

Our second crew had to start out the trek with a broken well in the first camp and a dry camp in the second. So you have to be prepared to carry quite a bit of water and should never turn down the opportunity to get more, especially if it's potable. Remember, and your ranger will tell this to you too, to "treat the threads" of your containers by spilling a little of the treated water through the threads. If you don't, then you can still drink in untreated water from the mouth of the bottle or bag.

Also, I think we have all been a little remiss in not reminding you that the Polar Pure has to have time to recharge and that recharging time is dictated by the air temperature.

On our trek each person had a hydration pack of 3 liters and carried 2
Nalgene bottles that were 1 liter each for a total of 5 liters per person. This
provided enough water for a complete days hiking. We took the Nalgene
collapsible canteens of 96 & 48 ozs. We would fill these as we went through the last
potable water camp at the end of day or from a stream. These provided water
for cooking and cleaning at night and leftover went into empty containers in
the morning. If we were headed to a dry camp, we filled these as extra water.
Having these prevented trying to carry a large container that is heavy and
these fit into packs easily. Water management becomes one of your high
priorities each day depending upon where you are headed. We did have dinner for lunch
one day next to a stream as we were headed to a dry camp. This way all of the
water we carried from the stream was for personal use with the extra to
share as needed the next day.
