RE: [Philmont]: Water carriers

Pete,

I second Coop's comments, and have one to add: nobody likes the idea of
consuming water from a container that another crew member has sucked on. For
that reason, our crew each carried 4 liters capacity in bottles (rigid like
Nalgene or soda bottles which are lighter and cheaper, or soft like the
Nalgene Cantene or the collapsible Platypus). One rigid bottle was clearly
marked as "Personal" and was used for drinking. When it was empty, the crew
member would refill the personal bottle from one of their other bottles. All
water containers except the personal ones were considered crew gear and were
used for cooking, as well as passed around the crew for refilling personals
while on the trail. In addition, we carried three 4-liter Platypus bags,
usually flat and empty except when needed for dry camps and that last day on
Tooth Ridge.

Subject: [Philmont]: Water carriers

A question regarding water carriers:

What does everyone use? Nalgene bottles? Bladder-type carriers? A
combination? What about a 2-3 liter bladder carrier that will fit in the
top of one's pack? Lots of water for those long days between water sources,
but are they the best option?

I'm familiar with the collapsible water jugs. Those could work, too, (for
in camp) but I'm thinking that if each person on the crew were to have at
their disposal a water container that could carry a substantial amount of
water on the trail, it might end up being the best alternative.
