In 2001, I tented with my son. We were "stuck" together by the crew, as
some other sleeping arrangements were made. I'm big - 6'2" tall and 250 pounds
(after dumping 30 lbs to make the Phil Limit) , and my 16 y/o son was about 6'
tall and 200 lbs. We slept in a standard issue Phil tent for two weeks
together. It was pretty tight, but we survived it. After two weeks, we were much
closer. During rain we would be in there together visiting. In hindsight, I'm
glad we spent so much time together.
On the other hand, Another father / son combo did not work out so well in
some of the other crew. They had to be rearranged mid trek.

Tents - Some Philmont campsites are pretty small, so it helps if you use two
man tents, and only enough for your entire crew. It is really up to the
father and son, whether or not they want to be tent mates. Since I have never
taken a son to Philmont, I really can't comment. Ten days can be a long time and
perhaps a father and son would like a little distance. It just depends. I
have always tented with another advisor. It means we get to share the weight of
the tent and we set up one tent, instead of two. It is just my way and yours
may differ.
