                         Fire threatens N.M. ranch town

A grass fire in northeastern New Mexico
scorched
10,000 acres and forced
the evacuation this morning of the ranching
village
of Miami, state
                         officials said today.

Dan Ware, a spokesman for the state Forestry
Division, said the fire
started about 1:30 a.m. from a downed power
line
four miles west of Miami.
The village is 12 miles west of Springer and
about
12 miles southeast of
                         the Philmont Scout Ranch headquarters.

State Police went door to door in Miami and
asked
residents to head for an
emergency shelter in Raton, Ware said.

At least 50 firefighters from northeastern New
Mexico were responding to
the blaze, Ware said. Roads around Miami were
to be
used as fire lines,
while engines and tankers had water to keep
Miami
from burning, he said.

"I think we have enough resources out there
that we
should be able to
defend against the fire," Ware said.

Today's forecast calls for warm temperatures
and
wind, he added, which
could make firefighters' job more difficult.

A 2002 fire in the area burned more than
92,000
acres.
