RE: [Philmont]: philmont news

I remember several years back when conditions in the mountains and
surrounding areas were not unlike this year, Philmont did a
prescribed/controlled burn to the pasture and areas surrounding base
camp and the PTC. Mark Griffin was at the ranch at the time and said
the purpose was two-fold. One, to promote the growth of the forage in
the spring (the plains tribes did this regularly to attract the buffalo
to the tender new grass) and two, to serve as a buffer in the event of a
wildfire in the base camp area. Since it had already burned, there was
less danger later on.

Subsequently, Colfax county had a very wet spring with late snows and
heavy rain. The spring at Shaeffer's pass was flowing very well, and
the ground was so saturated that a strong wind storm in late May took
out a number of trees that had to be cleared from the trails. They were
still working on it in late June.

Lets hope/pray for the moisture without the wind.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher

Fire threatens N.M. ranch town

A grass fire in northeastern New Mexico scorched 10,000 acres and forced
the evacuation this morning of the ranching village of Miami, state
officials said today.

Dan Ware, a spokesman for the state Forestry Division, said the fire
started about 1:30 a.m. from a downed power line
four miles west of Miami. The village is 12 miles west of Springer and
about 12 miles southeast of the Philmont Scout Ranch headquarters.
