It's about this time of year (when the depression of the Philmont wait list
it at it's peak <g>) that I make my pitch for the Denver Area Council
Alpine Adventure and Tahosa Trek programs. While these are not Philmont,
these are great high altitude backpacking programs that come at a much more
reasonable price than Philmont does! Almost all Adventures and Treks cross
the continental divide AT LEAST once, so participants should be prepared
for some outstanding vistas and some COLD mountain lakes!
Alpine Adventure is a six day mountaineering adventure that combines the
training facilities of Camp Tahosa High Adventure Base with the Indian
Peaks Wilderness Area (located in the middle of the Rockies about an hour
west of Boulder, CO). Participants are part of an 12 person team which
learn and practice low impact backpacking, basic rock climbing, mountain
hiking and, of course, free time activities like fishing, day hiking,
wildlife watching and high peak ascending. The only requirement is that
youth must be 13 years of age by January 1 of their year of attendance.
The cost is $250 per participant.
Tahosa Treks are a more tailored plan. This program started 10 years ago
to provide some basic backpacking training and low impact backpacking
knowledge. Now, it allows for more advanced training and longer, more
customized treks.
Bill McMahon, the ranger at Camp Tahosa, is a terrific guy and will work
with you to develop your adventure and then ensure everything is done to
make it a great experiece. You can find more information on these programs
at the Council website (www.denverareacouncil.com/council/camps/tahosa.htm)
or contact the ranger at Tahosa@aol.com. Either of these programs would
make a good Philmont replacement (or a wonderful pre-Philmont experience).
