Re: [Philmont]: sleeping bag rating for Philmont

Mid-June to mid-July tends to be drier; mid-July to mid-August tends to
be wetter. Remember these are tendencies, not hard rules. Point being,
most people feel colder when it's wetter out (even if they are dry).

Mid- to late-June tends to be the coldest stretch of the summer in terms
of actual temperatures. But morning temperatures in the 30's are
routine in July, and high altitude sites can drop into the 20's overnight.

The key point for advance planning is the number of high altitude sites
you have on your trek. If you are routinely camping at or above 8500
feet, go warmer on the bag. If most of your sites are below 8500 feet,
you can get away with a lighter rated bag, and augment it if needed with
thermal underwear and a pullover cap. I have gone to bed at Clark's
Fork where it was still 80-plus degrees at 10 pm. In such cases, I
sleep on top of my bag, and crawl in at 3 or 4 in the morning, when it
finally drops to 50 or whatever.

All of this subject, as you said, to individual variations in each
trekker's biothermostatic control...
