RE Sleeping Bag Ratings

I really over-analyzed this issue before we went in July 2004 to an
absurd level, I'm ashamed to say, only to have it be a non-issue. As a
prior frostbite victim in 5 toes (Thank you very much, Dahlonega
Georgia), I am very attuned to the issue of sleeping in cold temps.
After months of wrestling with the whole weight versus bag rating issue
and unwilling to spend a gazillion dollars on a bag that would
compromise the two, I took a 32 degree Coleman Exponent bag. Our worst
night for cold temps was in Head of Dean, where it hit 38-39 degrees and
raining. In my stuff sack I kept a pair of silk long underwear and one
pair of fleece socks. That night I wore the fleece socks and the silk
top and I was completely comfortable. We had a pretty snug North Face
tent, so it was warmer than 39 degrees inside.

However, as someone on here is wont to point out, "your actual mileage
may vary". It is dependent upon where your trek takes you, how much is
cold an issue to you, how "snug" is your tent, etc., etc. Ask questions
of others, consider lots of options, but seek your own counsel. No one
knows you better.
