Our crew used a Silicone fly with parachute cord and hiking poles in 2004.
It worked just fine. Yes the parachute cord stretches some, but that gives
it a little give in the wind so you don't tear up the tarp. I bought some
florescent yellow cord on sale and it helped with the trip ups.
I started out backpacking in 1970 using a tarp and parachute cord, so I've
had plenty of experience with it. Make sure you by the kernmantel (better
grade). It has a better weight rating. The cheap stuff tends to snap with
a load. The better stuff also works well with bear bags and we have had so
pretty heavy bear bags outside of Philmont.
