According to a short article in Backpacker a few months ago, kilts
1. Reduce chafing
2. Provide great ventilation (the editor wore one in the Grand Canyon)
3. Lightweight
4. "Stylish" (?)
5. Great range of motion
6. Sometimes cheaper than hiking pants/shorts of comparable material
In case we need to clarify, there are specially marketed "hiking kilts"
that are made of lightweight, moisture wicking material. We're not
talking about something that Mel Gibson would wear for a formal event.
As I said, we met a Scout around the age of 16 or 17 last summer, and
he said he wouldn't trade his hiking kilt for anything, and that he was
the most comfortable member of the crew during some of the hot
afternoons on the Ranch.

Subject: [Philmont]: Not Kilts
Good evening.
I have a Scout who wants to wear a pith helmet at Philmont. Actually, he
wants the whole crew to wear pith helmets at Philmont, but Mr. Palmer
will
wear his Tilley hat, thank you.
Can the group think of any pros and cons of this headgear, the pith
helmet?
Hey, this question is no more unusual than the discussion of kilts.
Thanks.
