A pith helmet could be useful, depending on the method of construction.
See http://www.hatsinthebelfry.com/page/H/CTGY/Pith+Helmets for some
information on pith helmets.
When I was a Scout our crew used straw cowboy style hats. I distinctly
recall that the headband got hot and sweaty and salty sweat would dribble
down and irritate the eyes.
The pith helmet, if constructed for function as well as style, is supposed
to
be good at keeping the head cooler, and was, and is, very useful in tropical
or
subtropical climates.
So your Scouts may be on to something useful, assuming they select pith
helmets that are constructed to achieve functional results and not just
emulate a style.
