Just off the top of my head (related to pith helments vs other headwear)
Pro's:
Waterproof rather than water resistant
Good protection for your head during hail storms
Provides sun protection for the neck and ears
Not as likely to blow off in the wind and if it does might not blow as
far as fast
Not as likely to be snatched off by a tree branch
Con's:
May be uncomfortable while wearing a tall backpack
Won't ventilate as well as fabric so might be hotter
Might not fit well under a rainsuit hood (because of the stiff back)
Heavier???
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
