You pick up all of the meals that will last until your next comissary pickup. Sometimes they have you are scheduled to miss a comissary. This year, on Trek 4, we had to start out with 6 days of food, even though we were within striking distance of a comissary on about day 3. As for your other question on weight, it varies from meal to meal. Some of the lunches include canned meat, and can get heavy. Cooking techniques are your own personal preference, We used the one pot method, put meals for 12 into one pot of boiling water, stirred for a few minutes, added the potatoes, stirred some more, and ate.

Usually only supper has to be cooked, although there was at least one breakfast with instant oatmeal.

Perhaps someone can clear up some things for me concerning the way the trek books display meal pickups. On a given trek it may show a single commissary in the food pickup column for 3 or 4 days in a row. Does this mean you pick up that many days food at the beginning of that leg and carry it the whole time, or do you pickup one day at a time from that commissary on each of the days of that leg?
