You can't go wrong with the advice in the Philmont Advisor's Guide, available for a small donation to Cooper Wright's Venture Crew. You also can't go wrong reading everything you can possibly read, from a variety of sources.
It often annoys me that the youth simply don't seem to want to read. They seem to enjoy boasting about how much more computer literate they are than us old timers, but when you really look into the details of the boast, it seems their computer literacy only leads them to to more and varied video game sites.
Handouts and emails seem to go unread or left behind after the meeting, generating telephone calls, not from the errant youth, who should have gotten the message through the written word so thoughtfully provided by those of us who are trying to guide them, but from their parents!
If I thought they would read it, I would purchase a copy of the Guide for each crew member. Since I know they won't, I save that expense.
All in all, I simply try to set a good example for the boys: "Be like me--read!!".
Circling back around to the thought that started this thread, by all means rely upon the advice in the Advisor's Guide.
Yours in Scouting.
