Greetings Kevin,

If you are talking about the Philmont Advisors' Guide that Coop and
Wally do, I absolutely read it.

On our first trek, I personally felt it made our experience much easier.
I didn't feel like I was a babe in the woods the whole time, because I
was aware of what was going on, rather than following the herd. I was
able to work with the Scouts in our crew on what was necessary at
Philmont, and I think as a result, our Ranger had a much easier time
during training, because it was more like a review than re-education.

We purchased copies for the advisors in our two crew this year, and they
have told me that they found the information useful as well.

As far as accuracy, Coop and Wally try to keep the information as
current as possible by soliciting feedback from current year attendees.
The first time I used it, I almost felt like an "insider", even though I
hadn't been to Philmont in twenty-five years (went as a youth). As
things developed, I think the information greatly reduced my stress
factor (the other advisor had to leave the trail due to an injury,
leaving just me.)

I will say that you can learn everything in the guide while you are at
Philmont, but IMHO, it is a lot better having the knowledge on Day One
than Day Eight. And WRT some of the prep information, when you get to
Philmont, its too late to do anything about it, other than to say "Gee,
I wish I/we had . . . " or "Next time I'm going to . . . ".
