RE: [Philmont]: Cooking Philmont Meals

Philmont Suppers, at least in 2004 & 2005, used components from commercial
backpacking food suppliers, Backpacker's Pantry for the most part.

Unlike suppliers like Mountain House www.mountainhouse.com who have a very
neat self standing foil package that allows you to boil water and add it to
them, the Backpacker's Pantry products come packaged in plastic bags so your
using a pot, lined or otherwise. There is hope (or not depending on your
personal feeling wrt trash impacts) as it appears from Backpacker's pantry's
latest catalog that they have adopted a foil pack, although from the picture
it is difficult to tell. You can look yourself at
http://www.backpackerspantry.com/. From a taste perspective the stuff is
pretty good. Last night was a lazy supper night around the Thompson
household and my youngest opted for a Philmont Supper 7 left over from our
last shakedown .. Mexican Beef (2 1/2 cups) & Refried Beans (1 1/2 cups)
with Cheesecake (2/3 cup) for Dessert ... pretty tasty stuff actually.

Each Supper contains a mix of two or three items that will require water. A
typical Entree will require 2 1/2 cups of boiling water (Scant as Joe T
says), side dishes another cup or cup and a half of boiling or hot water and
dessert often requires about a cup. All meals vary.

Between "cooking" and clean-up you should expect a daily contribution of a
litre per participant for supper, at least this was the rule of thumb we've
used. Upon arrival at Camp the cooks knew they had 12 litres ... every
member of our crew carries an "untouchable" crew nalgene for this purpose,
we also carry a couple of platapus water carriers for going into dry camps
as you must leave for the trail the next moring with adequate drinking water
as well.

  Subject: [Philmont]: Cooking Philmont Meals

Does anyone know the method for preparing dehydrated Philmont meals? Being
dehydrated, do you simple boil water and pour it into the bag with the food
for a few minutes while it to rehydrates? Any idea how much water a given
dehydrated Philmont meal would take?

Any idea what the average weight of a given day of Philmont food would be?

  Thanks,
