Another item that you might want to consider practicing with Philmont trail
food is the concept of stripping meals. I recommend using large freezer bags
to repack the meals after your crew reviews the meals at the food pickup
points to determine if they want to eat all the food. Food that your crew
does not want can be left in the trade box at the commissary. Our crews have
utilized this concept on our last two treks and reduced the weight of the
meals. However, I would recommend the lead Advisor observing this to make
sure that the meals are not stripped to the extreme. Another recommendation
I would make is to take several instant soup packages per scout ( purchase
it at home and bring with you ). In 2004, Philmont deleted the soup mixes
from the meals because most of the crews were not using the soup packages.
However, they are great on those rainy days on the trail. Also, don't forget
to bring your spices for your trail meals. Philmont only provides salt &
pepper. I also recommend the use of the turkey bag method for cooking the
dinners ( if practiced before arriving at Philmont )
