In short: Boy Scouts and Scouters are not supposed to wear military
garb for any Scouting activity. This may be another "Boy Scout Urban
Legend", but I have seen it specified in enough places that I believe it
is correct. It is also a very commonly violated rule, though not in my
Troop. I will note that in my personal observations over the decades,
Scouts dressed in military garb tend to act like undisciplined
paramilitaries with attitudes to match, especially when the whole Troop
has gone over. That is not universal, so don't villify me with
exceptions, but there's no question its a problem - though as I told a
high ranking gold-tabber one time, if the BSA had a uniform that was
worth a damn in the outdoors, and priced so it was only a moderate
rip-off, they wouldn't have to rule-monger about military garb. That
went over just about as well as you might expect.
