'01 we carried two water filters and used them when we had lots of time
beside a steam. Otherwise, we used polar pure.
'03 we carried one filter, did not use at all. Most of the time we were
able to get treated water from staffed camps that we stayed at or passed
through. For the few times we did not, we used polar pure.
'05 did not carry a filter. Used the tablets or treated water from
staffed camps.
It depends on your trek, but on many of the treks you can get a lot of
treated water when staying at or passing through staffed camps. If we
were not near treated water, we used untreated water for cooking and
cleaning (bring to a boil of course). I find using a filter when you
are pumping for 12 people is a time consuming task. Much easier to just
put in the tablets and go. This has worked for us.

Subject: [Philmont]: Water Filters/Purifiers
Philmont issues MP1 tablets, but also strongly recommends the use of
water filters/purifiers. My questions for the collective experience
are:
How important are filters/purifiers?
Are some water sources potentially contaminated with non-biological
agents, e.g., pesticides or other nasties that MP1 can't "kill?"
How many take filters/purifiers?
If you did take, how did you use? In place of MP1, with MP1, or other
circumstances?
Thanks,
Neal Osborn
