Re: [Philmont]: Philmont Meals

My daughter raves about the new "Oatmeal-to-go" (or something like that)
bars that are now in the stores. All the benefits of oatmeal without the
hassle of cooking. Maybe Philmont will explore adding them to the
breakfast meal line-up.... It would be fine by ME if they replaced the
cream-of-wheat breakfast with them. Cream-of-wheat must be an acquired
taste depending on the region you are from. Here in the West, the kids
prefer oatmeal to cream-of-wheat by a margin of about 10 to 1 <g>! YIS.

Instant Oatmeal: it doesn't need hot water. It works well with cold water
and since we never ate breakfast in camp why bother with stoves (unless
cold and rainy). Just pour some water into the packet, stir a bit, wait a
bit and eat. Guys thought they were just fine - we now have a new, easy
custom on troop hikes with cold instant oatmeal.

You pick up all of the meals that will last until your next comissary
pickup. Sometimes they have you are scheduled to miss a comissary. This
year, on Trek 4, we had to start out with 6 days of food, even though we
were within striking distance of a comissary on about day 3. As for your
other question on weight, it varies from meal to meal. Some of the
lunches include canned meat, and can get heavy. Cooking techniques are
your own personal preference, We used the one pot method, put meals for
12 into one pot of boiling water, stirred for a few minutes, added the
potatoes, stirred some more, and ate.

Usually only supper has to be cooked, although there was at least one
 breakfast with instant oatmeal.
