Re: [Philmont]: Water Filters/Purifiers and Camo

Our Crew used both the Micro-pur tablets and a filter system. We used
Micro-pur for most of the streams and the scouts liked the fact that there was no
after taste. It was a ritual to have all the water bottles lined up and then
plop and fizz your Nalgene. HOWEVER, there were a few streams that we
definitely filtered/pumped first. This removed the sediment (intake nozzle with
coffee filter) and removed a lot of the off taste of the water. We were at
Cathederal Rock(?) camp site below the Cito Res. and the water had a terrible
smell and taste with just the Micro-pur. By running it through our MSR filter
the odor and taste were greatly improved. It also taught the scouts an
alternate means of doing something. To each his own.

Our Crews had different Class B shirts made up for our Treks. Each Crew had
a Class B wicking t-shirt with the Troop logo but in different colors
selected by the Crew (ours was black!!!). This allowed us to readily identify our
scouts and kept us 'uniform'. One year the boys did select camo for the Class
B shirt and we used Real Tree (TR) shirts with the Troop logo. They looked
pretty good and will still wear the shirts on our other outings. There is a
little more leeway with the Class B.
