RE: [Philmont]: Philmont Meals

When we use the turkey bags, we basically use one pot for water boiling and 1 pot to hold the turkey bag. It gives you control over the amount of water that goes into the food and gives you a head start on the cleanup water.

I have heard several folks talk about splitting up the dehydrated food and reconstituting it individually. To me it seems like there is a lot of room to have some sort of accident. Also, during the cooking time, all of the crew is working on cooking instead of just 1 or 2. Each to his own, but I'm not going to give up centralized cooking just yet.

I’ve seen a lot on the one-pot method on this list with the turkey bags.   Last year, we just cooked in our cups/bowls, added the boiling water, and had no pot clean-up or turkey bag.  Cooks are relegated to water boilers and ladlers.

We’ll try the Oatmeal cold, we did survive pouring the hot water into the envelopes so far….

Instant Oatmeal: it doesn't need hot water. It works well with cold water and since we never ate breakfast in camp why bother with stoves (unless cold and rainy). Just pour some water into the packet, stir a bit, wait a bit and eat. Guys thought they were just fine - we now have a new, easy custom on troop hikes with cold instant oatmeal.
