Re: [Philmont]: Water Filters/Purifiers

I've carried them on our practice hikes so we can get accustomed to them. The "bleeding of the threads" is kind of a hassle since you have to wait for the chemical to become active before you can do this. Easy to forget. With Polar Pure, you could do it right after you put the chemical in the water.

Bringing them to practice is a good thing to do, however, micropur is expensive and non-renewable, so you have to strike a balance.

Depending on the trek really drives the need for purification and/or filter. We took the Micropur tablets in 05 and only used them once. We stocked up on water before we went into a dry camp and really had no problems, seemed to be approved water in lots of places. I spent time beforehand noting where water was before we left home. Left our filters in the locker at base camp, only brought them in case PSR didn't have the Micropur tablets, since they were new in 05 we weren't 100% sure they would have them in June when we arrived. We used Micropur tablets on a practice hike and loved them, no taste and quick acting. Read the directions carefully, a little scary, they are first EPA approved tablets to "purify". Short answer - we didn't take filters and only used pills once.

How important are filters/purifiers?

Are some water sources potentially contaminated with non-biological agents, e.g., pesticides or other nasties that MP1 can't "kill?"

How many take filters/purifiers?

If you did take, how did you use?  In place of MP1, with MP1, or other circumstances?
