I cannot speak for everyone, but our crew had a great time with our burro. Part of it might have been it was late July and he had become accustom to the Trek. The Scouts had a great time picking him out and even naming him. The burro would get excited every time he saw us coming to get him. Yes we HAD to do it. If you don't want to do it, you don't have to pick that Trek.

It wasnt all that clear in some of the previous books.
Its amazing that almost everything else is optional except for ranger training and service project.

In the past, if you selected a trek with burros, it was optional- that is, you could choose to use them or not. Going over the Treks 2006 book, it looks like it is not any longer.
