If the treks book says that you pick up Burros at either Ponil or Miranda, you have to pick them up. It will say in the program area of your Crew Leaders Copy. This started this past summer.

The reasoning behind making crews take burros is that many crews were wanting to take them but were not able to get those treks. And, crews that were on those treks were not taking them.

Most other programs that Philmont offers can either be done at more then one camp, are not unique to Philmont, or a side hike/change in hiking route can allow a crew to do it. Burros only go from Ponil to Miranda. Philmont knows that not everyone will be happy with this rule, but it will allow the crews that want this unique opportunity to be able to.

Many people don't like Burros because you hike slower and miss a side hike over Wilson Mesa. First of all you shouldn't be in a hurry at Philmont. It is a vacation. With Wilson Mesa, it is a short side hike from Pueblano to the lake at the top and back down.

Does it clearly state which treks require the burros?

It wasn't all that clear in some of the previous books.

Its amazing that almost everything else is optional except for ranger training and service project.

In the past, if you selected a trek with burros, it was optional- that is, you could choose to use them or not. Going over the Treks 2006 book, it looks like it is not any longer.
