Strip the cardboard and take out the food that you do not want. If you are concerned about damage to the fragile items, repack into slid or zip lock bags and leave a little air inside the bag. The air inside the bag will protect the food sorta. Pack on top of the load. Also have them write their names on the bags. We have a "carry your own food" deal in our group. It just makes it fair to all, large or small. If they want it, they will carry it. At base camp we have started out with that much food (72 bags). Ranger said we could NOT dump food!? Ok, that night just strip out the cardboard and take out the unwanted food and put it in your locker. Take it home for souvenirs. Sometimes you just do what you need to do and go on. Just like work, "it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission"!

We had itinerary 4 in 2005 and had two 4 day food pickups as our biggest pickups, and the commissaries were directly on our path, no side hikes needed. If they have gone to a six day pickup for 2006, that would be a pretty big change to itinerary 4. We had a hard enough time finding room for 4 days of food, I can't imagine having to carry 6 days worth.

You pick up all of the meals that will last until your next comissary pickup. Sometimes they have you are scheduled to miss a comissary. This year, on Trek 4, we had to start out with 6 days of food, even though we were within striking distance of a comissary on about day 3.
