Re: [Philmont]: Water Filters/Purifiers

We use the MSR Waterworks II. When I bought these filters back in 01, this
was the filter the USN Seals used in 3rd world countries. Last time I
checked my map NM was not in a 3rd world country. I haven't been out there
since last August though. It is a cattle ranch. We have used them each
trip and all practice hikes for Philmont each trip. No one has ever gotten
sick from the water. I wish I could remember where I was when we were
pumping water at in 02, a kid came by and just put his Nalgene under the
flow over the board where the water was backed up at. He just filled it up.
Then he dropped his 2 cap full's of Polar Pur into it, shook it up, bleed
the threads and started back to his camp. Then I asked him if that was all
he was going to do to his water? He said like nothing was wrong and it
wasn't, "nope" and walked off. As he walked off I told him he was a better
man than me! Now that I have been there 3 times and going back in June, he
was right. We grab water at every source, staffed camps and creeks or rivers
out there. Never pass a water source without filling up. You will fill up
each time after you have ran out of water on the trail somewhere out there.
If you water for the next day, just Micro Pur the water at night. It will
be ready the next morning. I have never filtered and Polar Purred or now
Micro Purred. I have just bought a MSR Miox. I will let you know how it
works later on.
