The fact that your burro was excited every time he saw you coming tells me
that your guys "got it" with regard to caring for the burro. It is an
important lesson that the burros at Philmont can teach.
We acquired a dog a while back whose previous owner had severely mistreated
him. At first, when we approached the dog he would cringe. With time and
patience the dog has come around, happily wagging his tail and greeting us
when we come toward him.
Burros are a challenge. They are slow. They are stubborn. However, they
are quite strong and a real asset in carrying gear. They are fun to make
friends with.
When I attended Philmont I recall reading a slim volume (sorry, don't recall
the title and author) on the southwestern burro, written by a jurist who
compared them favorably to some people he had encountered. I took from this
reading that animals can think in some fashion and that if you treat them
well (a Scout is Kind) they will respond in kind (pun intended).
If you participate in the burro program, make the time to make friends with
your burro. You will not be disappointed in the response you will get.
